Who said kids don't eat veggies?
Chef Fred Baschal demonstrates how to cut a chicken.
Can you teach me how to do that without making a mess?

Learn How To Get Your Chef Boyardee On

Health

If you were at Prairieview Elementary School on Tuesday night, the aroma of chicken stir fry and risotto could be smelled emanating from the cafeteria. But this wasn’t preparation of the following day’s lunch, it was all part of a cooking demonstration.

As part of the Healthy Neighborhoods in Schools program, area elementary schools have been hosting cooking demonstrations by Chef Laura Walters of Laura’s Gourmet Catering, the 2008 Small Business of the Year as awarded by the BC Area Chamber of Commerce, and Chef Fred Baschal, a retired culinary instructor from the Calhoun Area Career Center (aka the Tech Center, aka the Vo-Ed Center, aka that place on Roosevelt Avenue).

The chefs provide you with the recipes and walk you step-by-step through the process of making the meal. Along the way, they throw in great tips such as how you can wash kidney beans under cold water to cut back on sodium, or how you can save a couple bucks by buying a whole chicken and cutting it yourself. But it’s when the meal is done that the real fun begins.

Participants get to sample everything the chefs prepare. And doing my journalistic duty, I tried both the risotto and the stir fry. Three words, de-li-cious!

The cooking demonstrations are free to attend and take about an hour and a half to complete. After the demonstration is complete, you have the option to buy handy sacks that contain all the ingredients needed to make what the chefs prepared. Purchases are made through Fresh on Wheels, a mobile market sponsored by the Community Foundation and Sprout Urban Farms, a local community garden network.

Childcare is provided so parents can listen, watch, and learn how to make delicious meals that your kids (and pocket books) will love.

There is another cooking demonstration scheduled for this Thursday, December 8. It will be held at Franklin Elementary School, located at 20 Newark Avenue off of Main Street near Dairy Queen, and the demonstration starts at 6:00 pm.

It’s the perfect opportunity to learn how you too can become Chef Boyardee.
