Open enrollment lasts from October 15 through December 7, 2011.

Do you find it difficult to understand Medicare? Do you struggle to find the right plan for yourself or a loved one? There are changes coming for 2012 as well as new tools that can help you decide.

There are some pleasant surprises for 2012:

  • Average premiums will be four percent lower than in 2011.

  • 100% of people with Medicare in Michigan have access to a Medicare Advantage plan that doesn’t charge a premium.

  • Medicare-covered preventive services are available without paying a co-pay or deductible and includes an Annual Wellness Exam with your physician and a mammogram or other cancer screenings.

  • Those who reach the donut hole will enjoy deep discounts on brand name drugs and expanded coverage for generic drugs.

  • Strengthened consumer protections and improved plan choices.

  • There will be additional services at no charge.

Beneficiaries should receive their 2012 Medicare & You handbook as well as a notice from their current plan that describes any changes from 2011 to 2012 by late September.

Users will be able to compare plans with the Medicare Plan Finder online at www.Medicare.gov starting October1, 2011. With 34 plans available in Michigan starting early is good idea.
