Reginald Helping Veterans

No Vet Left Behind

Health

All of the Vet to Vet groups are run for Veterans by Veterans. They dedicate themselves to helping fellow Veterans in their time of need, leaving no Veteran behind. They seek to reach out to fellow Veterans whenever possible. “As Veterans, we are here to teach, to learn, and to help ourselves and others on the road to recovery,” added Howard.”

No Vet Left Behind - Vet to Vet Program

Meet Reginald Howard. He is a U.S. Navy Veteran. He served from 1980-1991. Upon his honorable discharge he dealt with depression, substance abuse and homelessness. In April 2007 he came to the Battle Creek VA Medical Center and received services to successfully get his life back.

Now employed at the VA, he helped start a support group called Vet to Vet, a group of Veterans who meet weekly to help each other with everyday challenges of life, on life’s terms. Now as a Michigan Certified Peer Support technician he works in the Hud-Vash Department at the VA helping homeless Veterans with their housing and recovery. “It is very rewarding and complementary to my own recovery and life change,” said Howard. “I encourage any struggling or homeless Veteran to contact their local VA or call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans 1-877-424-3838 or 1-877-4AID-VET.”

Several groups have been developed to help Veterans:

·        Expand their social support network.

·        Increase trust with others.

·        Decrease isolation and loneliness.

·        Participate in group problem solving.

·        Teach themselves and others about recovery.

·        Increase coping skills.

·        Learn to enjoy doing things with others.

The Vet to Vet program includes men and women Veterans from both combat and peacetime. The Vets in the program give a little help to those that need a little help.

“Whether you’re a Veteran that needs help or one that can be a support for another Veteran your life will be changed by this program,” said David Fisher.
