Sew Unique Has Sew Many Options.

opinion

If you love to sew then you will love Sew Unique! I'm a barely thirty something sewist. I might seem to be out of the normal demographic of people who sew but, sewing among all ages and genders is on the rise.

There seems to be an almost inherent need in our fast paced, technologically driven society to create things with our hands that we can touch and feel; things that will last. It's exciting to see so many people interested in the craft and the internet has opened so many doors and connections into that world. Unfortunately, the big chain fabric stores seem to be "behind the times." when it comes to the growing trend. Don't get me wrong I spend a lot of time and money at JoAnn fabrics and I really appreciate the ladies that work there, they are very kind and helpful. It's just that if I'm going to go through the trouble of sewing my own wardrobe or making dolls for my nieces I don't want it to come out looking like every body else.   You can buy things off the internet, and I have. But, it's not the same as going into a store with a knowledgeable staff and being able to hold up the fabrics, touch them, lay out all sorts of notions and rick rack on the table to see how it all goes together. Enter Sew Unique. I discovered this store the same way I discovered Station 66; someone who knew me kept telling me I would love the place. OH. MY. They were right. I don't like to say something is my favorite, but this store is very nearly my favorite store. It's certainly my favorite place in Battle Creek. Some people find their Zen on the golf course or at the mall I find mine at Sew Unique.  If I've had a bad day or am stressed I'll go wander around the shop buy a yard of fabric and emerge like a brand-new person! So why is this store so cool? I'm glad you asked. It is locally owned, and decorated and displayed in the most beautiful fashion. Something you can't get in a chain is the pride and vision of the owners. Let me just say that you can tell how much Sue Stanton, the owner, loves and takes pride in her shop. She carries all the hard to find designer and Indie designer fabrics such as Moda, and Amy Butler. She has a huge array of unique buttons and other notions. She carries wonderful patterns from Indie designers and very cool books. Sue is also extremely helpful (she’s spent a lot of time helping me pick out fabric or decipher a pattern instruction.) When I asked her why she started this type of store (Battle Creek really isn’t that big) she said it was out of necessity; there was no one around to teach her how to use her embroidery machine the way she wanted to use it. She figured she wasn’t the only person yearning to learn new sewing skills. From that Sew unique emerged and she now offers classes for all skill levels and for every thing from quilting to purse making.  She told me that her favorite things about owning her own store are getting to meet so many interesting and cool people. Isn’t that what local business ends up being about in the end; being involved with your customers and in your community? If you sew, quilt, embroider or, you know some one who does or, you want to learn, you have to check out her shop. It’s on Beadle Lake Road in the Tower Road Commercial Park suit F (near the red cross). Her hours are Monday-Friday 10-5 and Saturday 10-2. I have a feeling it will be one of your favorite stores too.
