St. Philip Tigers Celebrate Catholic Schools Week!
Schools
On January 29th - Febuary 5th, Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools celebrated their annual Catholic Schools Week. Here's a look at what St. Philip Central High School did to celebrate CSW.
Monday was the first day of Catholic Schools Week as St. Philip Catholic Central High School where students gathered in the parish center, with the majority wearing their CSW's (Catholic Schools Week) Monday dress code theme: "Sweats Day". After their upcoming prayer and a brief reading about a saint for the day, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, students then went on with their daily schedule. At five past eleven, when Monday's game was to begin, which was dogde ball with seniors vs. sophmores and juniors vs. freshman.
Tuesday, students again assembled in the parish center with a prayer and a brief reading about St. Thomas Aquinas. Dress code for Tuesday was "Retro Day". Then at five past eleven the dogde ball tournament began. Seniors vs. Juniors. "It was fun; exciting. I, honestly, enjoyed dodge ball more than I ever enjoyed any sport," said Gabe Perry, a junior at St. Philip who had participated in the game.
Wednesday's saint was St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. However, instead of heading off to classes until five past eleven today, St. Philip students sat quietly as guest speaker, Father Fitz came and talked about how the students needed to grow. To expand their faith to the outside world, to always live the life of a Christian and to never forget how lucky they were to be in a Catholic school. Dress code was "College Day".
Thursday's saint was St. John Baptist de La Salle. Morning classes were normal, but afternoon classes were cancelled because of the "downtown lunch" and going down to the skating rink at noon. Dress code was "Spirit Day" (Jeans with ANY St. Philip shirt or sweater). "I had a great time building stronger relationships with my class and I loved all the fun activities we did too," said freshman, Maria Bridges.
Friday's saint was St. Augustine. Dress code was "Formal Day". After a group Mass with St. Joseph's eight graders, along with St. Philip students at eight fifty in the morning, all went to the gym and had a round of dogde ball. Each STP student was paired with an eighth grader. Students also got to enjoy a refreshing snack and a relaxing hour for the special second theme of "Kindergartan Day". Juniors & Seniors had snacks in the morning, while Freshman & Sophmores had snacks in the afternoon. However, as the week began to settle down, the principle of St. Philip, Don Shafer was asked of what he had thought of the whole week. What were his plans for the future? " A sense of community is very evident when you enter our school with our students, staff and parents. Our students give of their time, talent and treasure in many ways and to many places. Our faith is celebrated and recognized by being one in the spirit. I truly believe we are a group who thinks of others first."
