Timeboxing?

Opinion

I came across an intriguing productivity idea. It is called "Timeboxing."

Timeboxing is the idea to block a small chunk of time for small but necessary tasks. For example, organizing files. Organizing files are something any office worker hates but is necessary to get done. Instead of delaying until you have immense stacks, you set 10 minutes and knock out as much as you can. When the 10 minutes are up, you stop and move on to a more weighty task.

Here, are some tasks that are perfect to timebox at home and work.

Cleaning The Refrigerator

The refrigerator can be the grossest appliance you have in the kitchen, especially if you have young children. My fridge has stains and stickiness galore. Since it can close you don't actually notice or care. (Tip: If it gets really bad, you take out the light bulb) If you applied timeboxing, you can easily clean the spills or stains in the fridge more often.

Your Child's Bedroom

We live in a culture where we have kids toys galore. For some reason, our kids like to take out every toy they have. Clean up at the end of the day can become the most arduous chore. If you applied timeboxing, you can chunk out a few 10 minute slots in the day to keep it manageable at night. You could even create a game, "Be the clock!" Children love games even cleaning games.

Your Office Desk

My desk has papers on it and lots of them. The desk being messy hampers creativity in the work place. My job consists of being at a high level of creativity. A messy desk burdens and overwhelms. Timeboxing at the beginning of the day, midday break, and at the end will give your mind the feeling that it will be cleaned later. This will help your mind to be creative.

Being Sociable in the Office

Being sociable in the office is important, your coworkers and bosses need to know who you are. Sometimes we can be too sociable and look lazy. So you need a healthy balance. Schedule walking around times. It is important to get out of your office every hour. Block off 10 minutes each hour to chat with coworkers or just walk around to say hi.
